 Post subject: Attachment restriction Warning
New postPosted: Mon Oct 25, 2010 8:33 am

Is it possible to notify a user of attachment/upload restrictions prior to the upload finishing.
For example, i see no reason not to be able to upload .themepacks (i'm sure there is a reason ;) ).
After uploading an 8MB .themepack we're told the extension is not allowed. A little annoying, any way to change this behaviour?
Cheers

I've added .themepacks to the allowed attachments but 2MB remains the upload limit. Larger attachments should be hosted externally.

At this time, I'm not going to dig through PHPBB to find a way to make it more proactive on attachments as I've considered removing the feature entirely due to server space issues (I'm running low already and will be consolidating space as I remove a server in the next two months.)

EDIT: 2MB limit does not apply to admins :)

I didn't know we had special permissions ;)
I think you may misunderstand - For example, if a regular user wants to upload a 1.9MB .exe file, after the upload we are told hat the extension is not allowed, what i'm getting at it is that can we get that warning prior to it uploading and not waiting a few minutes for it to upload only to be told it's not allowed.
Any-whoo, if you're considering removing the upload feature permanently, not-to-worry!
Cheers Rich :D

I understood but yeah, if it's not native to PHPBB (and I wish it was because no one likes to wait around for an error message), then I won't be adding it--for now.

Post subject: Re: Attachment restriction Warning  Topic is solved

For this post the author Rich has received gratitude : Stu

Marking this as solved purely because, while it's a good suggestion and the solution isn't that difficult, I really don't want to take the frameworks I use too far out of support. I enjoy customizing frameworks (can you tell?) but the documentation and, in some cases, maintenance on customizations (i.e. during upgrades, server moves, other modifications) takes too much time. If I ever get to the point where I can hire a dedicated, talented developer, changes like this will become a reality.

Please keep these ideas coming. They help the site grow and have helped the site become what it is today. These threads will remain an inspiration for the future.

Solved (with a "no" answer) for now...
