Post subject: How to Verify Internet Speed From Taskbar
New postPosted: Sat Jun 12, 2010 10:28 am

I'm running Win-7 Ultimate 64 bit on my desktop PC and in my tasktray (right corner) I have an icon that shows I'm connected to my Linksys. When I place my cursor over it it states which connection the PC is connected to...hardwired not wireless.

When I had Win XP the icon would also show the connection speed but for some reason Win-7 does not show the speed of the connection when I put my cursor over the icon...

If I had a wireless connection it would be different but this one is hardired and I want to check now and then to verify my speds.

Any help appreciated...

Go to the network icon and right click it..then select network and sharing center..once it opens up, click view status of your active connection.. it should show the speed.

Thanks but that I already know...what I'm trying to get is to be able to mouse over the icon in the sys tray and have it show the speed. Your way makes me go thru a bunch of steps just to get what I want to show in the tray.

Thanks anyhow...

*WinXP used to enable you to show a little dual pc icon in the tray showing connectivity (within the network area, all you had to do is place a check mark in the little box to "Show Staus in the sys tray" and when moused over...it would show the connection speed. That's what I'm looking for in the Win-7 versin if available.

Right click your Network Icon in SysTray.....Then click your Access type: Internet, just below it that is hyperlinked to get your internet speed.

Viola, your internet speed comes right up...

Look below

I have a wired...not a wireless and my hyperlink shows "local area connection" not wireless, if I had a wireless connection it might work...

For some unknown reason in win-7 the option to place a check mark in the sytem notification area of the lan settings was removed for newer OSs'.

I was meaning to say, EITHER a Wifi, or Wired...so, it doesn't matter...it's still the same thing....

I don't have any Wired connection to even see this but it should not even matter....A connection is a connection that reach the WAN to the Cloud (Internet).

I just checked what you were apeaking of and the it's the same thing fr my laptop running the same OS as well.

I CAN get the speed like you stated using your way but you CANNOT hover your mouse over the tray icon and get the info as in a pop up cloud like the way you cold in WinXP as the option was removed from the networks section ie; "show status in tray"

Well, the speed pop-up from the old Windows XP might not be there, but I found a nifty app which is pretty close to what you need (and most of the Windows 7 user need), the Network Activity Indicator for Windows 7. http://www.itsamples.com/network-activi ... cator.html

It loaded well enough in my W7 64 bit and it has quite a number of options. Check it out.

Thanks, I tried this one already but it does not give what I hoped for...maybe we'll all get lucky and see a modified one that shows the speed of the connection the way it used to be in WinXP in the future...

I just had a play around and it looks like this feature was removed. I'll let you know if I come across a modification/tool to accomplish this.
