Post subject: The Strange Problem of Dissappearing App
New postPosted: Tue Mar 13, 2012 2:51 pm

OK so this is a strange problem I am facing for last few days. An app suddenly starts and exits from the taskbar. It's so fast that even after recording the screen video and playing it frame by frame I was unable to read it's name. Event viewer did not help too ! Is there any other way to know it's name?

Thanks !

What app is causing this problem? Perhaps you have a Malware infected system that's manipulated your software?

Fill us in mate...

Hello guys. It's not a malware. I am sure. It's most probably a software service. The problem is I can't determine which one is it. My system is malware free, all my software's are legitimate copies.

Ok first of all, I know you're using REVO to view the installed programs. Have you tried looking in, "All Programs & Features" and compare? That way, you'll know exactly what is missing; however, I would not bet REVO 100% because they don't always show all the installed apps. How about looking into Programs folder in C:\?

When you detect something that is missing and or disappearing, in most likelihoods that you may have a malware that Norton can't see. Norton is not a Top 5 best AV's.

To investigate deeper, go into the Install direction in the Registry where programs are installed, and look in there and compare as well as determine what is missing.

Try these for now and let us know, then we can try more steps...

Uncle Rick, it's not Revo, it's the Windows Uninstall Utility. Here's a snapshot of my installation registry:

Does this help? Also this review says Norton was the second best Antivirus, best in terms of detection. Is it a malware problem? I haven't seen any symptoms yet. Who knows.

According to this link: http://internet-security-suite-review.t ... views.com/ Norton is in the top 5, and on the 5th position from BitDefender being first. Either way, whatever your comfortable with is more important.

Moving on....

Well, Jeet, it's your job to Compare and Contrast differences, i.e. Registry Installs + C:\Program Files and/or C:\Program Files(86). Think of it as doing an investigation, i.e Forensics. Finding the "Needle in a haystack" type of thing.

The screen shots tells me nothing because I, neither do you, know what program is or disappeared.

My biggest guess is you may have gotten a Malware of some form that is messing with the program that disappeared. I could be wrong.

Go take the time and compare files, folders, programs, etc...

I think we're barking up the wrong trees here. At least starting off wrong.
Bust out Process Explorer and have a really good look through it.

Is there any rhyme or reason as to when this happens or is it sporadic?
Could it be an auto-updater? Have you checked your services and tried disabling any non-MS services? etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.

Stu is it possible to view program history in process explore...I mean the programs that were started and closed? trying to disable services. Will return to you guys with results.

Update: Disabled NVIDIA 3D Display service and Skype Updater and didn't notice the problem since then. But still I am skeptic. Will keep you guys posted.
