For this post the author Kishan Bagaria has received thanks - 2: Rich, Shaikhan

Windows 7 Start Orb Changer v3 is available and it fixes the "GDI+" bug so please download it again.

Windows 7 Start Orb Changer is a free tiny portable tool that allows you to change your Windows 7 start orb with one click. No need to manually do anything! Just select your start orb bitmap and you are done.

There are 2 files and 1 folder in the archive:

Windows 7 Start Orb Changer.exe - The main executable file

Sample Orbs - Contains 38 sample start orb bitmaps

r.exe - Used by the tool to replace the start orb bitmaps

If you don't have any start orb bitmaps, you can use Google to find it and I have also added some sample start orb bitmaps in it. The start orb bitmaps which I have provided are not created by me and the full credit goes to the original authors (See Credits.txt for more info). If you want to restore the original start orb back then change the orb to the first sample start orb bitmap in the Sample Orbs folder.

The 2 files "Windows 7 Start Orb Changer.exe" & "r.exe" should stay in the same folder to work. It works with both Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit. If you find any bugs, just inform me about it.

Changelog:

v3:
Fixed the "GDI+" bug. For this, the support for .jpg, .png & .gif image file types is gone.
The explorer can now automatically restart itself. No need to click on Start Explorer anymore.
Added an option to backup the unmodified explorer. The backup is stored as explorer_backup.exe.
Added more sample start orbs.

v2:
Added more sample start orbs.
Added support for .jpg, .png & .gif image file types.

v1:
Initial release.

^^Some users are having the same problem. Can't find a fix though. Can you tell me how many times the unhandled exceptions appeared?

Once. When I selected the image. The first time I quit, the second time I continued and it worked anyway.

I've written a tutorial (I noticed there was no README in the zip file.) You can use it with the program if you wish.

This is a great ideea.

But i keep getting the unhandled exception error all the time.
It worked the first time I used your program but afterwards I can't
seem to get it to work again. I can't revert the orb to default or anything
and I'm kinda stuck with an orb that I don't like

I tried Continue/Quit over 2 dozen times each with different samples but i can't get it to work.
I changed it's path, I tried to load from another path but nothing...

Here's the error i get:
See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
    <system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

Hope you can fix this because I would apreciate if i could change that orb again.

Did you try running as an administrator? Just a shot in the dark but it may help?

Used it. Works well once the patch you recommended from your website was applied and I rebooted. Highly recommend. Much easier than trying to patch it in the registry. Great job!

Well i used the manual mode to change it so I'm done
but still, I don't know why it won't work at all.

I think you should test all included Orbs, most of them worked fine on a 64 System, but I went and tried a Windows Flag,
but things just became unhealthy in my happy 7/64 system...

I'd suggest you Test this baby out completely or you'll have many unhappy folks..!

Yes I did get my 7/64 back to normal, thanks to using a little ingenuity on Sunday morning

Please check all ORBs and test them out,

Thank You..!
