For this post the author d6k5d3 has received gratitude : Singh1966

u may wholeheartedly trust ur antivirus n may rest in peace thinking that it is doing its work. but sometimes ur antivirus may fool u. i want to mean that it may not work as expected.
to check out whether ur antivirus is always alert n catch all sorts of viruses n malware i have a nice idea to share with u :) if ur antivirus passes the test then i believe u can certainly b sure of the credibility of ur antivirus.

X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*

just copy n paste the above on a notepad n save it anywhere o ur pc giving any name u would like to. be 1000% sure that it is not any virus or malware itself. its just a test to check whether ur antivirus works perfectly or no. it cannot replicate itself n will do no harm to ur pc.

after u save the above notepad file ur antivirus should b able to detect it as a virus if it is not sleeping (!). i have done the test on my pc as well n my MSE could catch n remove it from my pc.

let me know if u find it useful. :)

thank u ... :)

Looked at this a while ago TEST YOUR ANTI VIRUS the real test is when you encounter a real virus/trojan ;)

As long as your AV Software is up to date and dont visit dodgy sites or download from dodgy sources im sure you will be fine

+1 on that.
I used to use this to test AV but in the end thought it was a bit of a weak test.
What's also nice about MSE is that if you attempt to "Save As..." the .txt file (link here), before deciding where to save the file, MSE kicks in with a warning. The location of the file is obviously a .tmp file. What's a bit annoying about this is that in the options for MSE i checked off the option to auto-scan downloaded files and attachments....damn computer has decided it doesn't take instruction from humans anymore!

What name you give this is irrelevant. If your AV picked it up only when saved as eicar.com then i suggest you change AV program.
