Post subject: office file won't open/ file format ?'s
New postPosted: Sun Jun 24, 2012 3:32 pm

I can't open an important file I saved under an older version of libre office as doc format, any suggestions? I am currently trying to open it under abiword under linux and it seems to freeze the program up as well...

Update: I renamed the file extention with txt and was able to open it with a notepad program, but it still doesn't show the information I want...

Is ODT a pretty good format to be saving in from now on?

I did an experiment in your situation.

I used Ubuntu Linux v12.12. I saved the file as DOC, in Office 2010... I put it in Linux, and Libre Office was able to open it no problems. I saved the file to a different file name in Ubuntu, and reopened it, no problems.

But, when I saved the file as in Ubuntu using LibreOffice, it asked me two things: Used MS Word 2007/2010/XML Format or ODF s you mentioned. I chose the first option.

I reopened the file in Windows 7 using Word 2010, it was able to see everything, it can read ODF, DOC and DOCX, plus others... I had no problems.

It shouldn't even matter which format you save it under, because Word 2010 can read ODT as well...

I don't know exactly the culprit of your problem, because it didn't matter what format I use between LibreOffice and Office 2010, in my opinion.

Just my observation and experience.

Thanks for the post,
Except for complaining about Java required, I was able to open a copy of it successfully in an older openoffice that I thought worked well in the past, weird, it opened it as an rtf file I had saved it as in the past. I will try/consider using ODT
