When you need more than 1.5 hours of battery life. There's no set time to replace a battery; when performance is less than acceptable, it's time to replace your battery. If you only need your battery for, say, 10 minutes maximum, then I would buy one when my current battery lasts less than 10 minutes.

I agree with Rich, there have been batteries that have gone up to 10 mins, poof, it dies, or perhaps less then 10 min. Make sure you look at eBay, NewEgg, PriceWatch, those sites are pretty much reputable for a good battery.

It should also be noted that Lithium-ion batteries have a life span of 2-3 years regardless if it's been used or not.

So always check for the date of manufacture before you make a battery purchase.

Usually by the time you NEED a new battery you will need to do a little cost/benefit analysis. In 2-3 years, will you want to spend $100 to keep an older PC running or save that towards a new laptop?

The biggest problem that everyone neglects to do when getting a new battery is no one ever completely charge the battery more then 12hrs, for 9 cell batteries...then, let battery drain all the way, otherwise, if it's only a quarter or more %, then it can have a slight adverse affects to the battery.

Just my two cents...

I second that and i'm one of those neglectful people myself. It's just, when you get a new toy, you want to play with it now, not in 12hrs! Why manufacturers can't supply batteries fully charged is a mystery to me.

Actually it isn't a mystery... i suppose they supply the battery with say, 25% charge in it, knowing people will do exactly the same as me (we are a predictable race aren't we!). That way there's probably a 30% higher chance of me needing a new one for it in 2yrs time. Supplying a perfect charged battery should in theory never need replacing therefore potentially loosing them money.
