Post subject: Webcam (motion eye) stopped working (Sony VGN-Z790 Win7 x64)
New postPosted: Tue Nov 02, 2010 6:46 pm

Hi,

I have my Sony Vaio VGN-Z790 working perfectly with Win7 x64 for over a year now (including the Function keys !!).

Few days ago I've upgraded my Skype from 4.2 to the new 5.0 and immediatly the built-in webcam ('Motion eye') stopped working. In 'Device List' I have now an unknown USB device (no more 'Imaging' entry).

In the sony drivers download site there is no driver (only the ArcSoft webcam SW) so I had to look around. Here are all my failed trials, I would appreciate any idea but reinstall the OS:

1. Uninstalling Skype 5.0
2. Reinstalling skype 4.2
3. Going back to an earlier restore point (I couldn't believe that this one failed...)
4. Letting the 'Device list' find the driver by itself online or localy.
5. Installing this driver: "Camera Driver (Ricoh) 6..209G - 6.1005.209.0_logo" from here - apperantly the sony's 'Motion Eye' webcam is actually a Richo webcam. It installed without errors but didn't change a thing.
6. Trying to install the driver from here - gave me a weird error about not compatiable OS as mine is x64 (the inf file of this driver has x64 entries...)
7. Connecting an old (too old to use in order to restore but one that had the webcam working) system image as external hard disk and letting the 'Driver Update' in the 'Device list' search for the correct driver in teh image's "C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository"

Thanks in advanced!

Have you tried getting the driver from Sony's website? Go to esupport.sony.com and type in your model number - this is how I got the most up-to-date hardware drivers for my VAIO.

But of course... That is how I installed (a year ago) my Win7 on top of the Vista that came with the laptop.
and from my post -

I think that the Win7 somehow suppose to support the webcam natively or something alike.

Oops... sorry I missed that.

You need a driver to operate any hardware in Windows 7, that's how the OS communicates with the hardware. The only thing I can think of is to uninstall any webcam driver you may have on the machine and restart it and hope that Windows Update picks up the right one. That's usually how I resolve hardware issues and it tends to work pretty well. I rarely try to manually install drivers, as that tends to muck things up.

It's in the Device Manager somewhere... not in front of my Windows 7 PC at the moment, so you'll have to bear with me. Try to find the device there, and then try to remove it. If that's not possible, go into the settings or preferences for that device and search for a new driver or try to remove the driver. I'll try to update this post when I get home.

ah, ok, that process I know... I thought you have some manual process or alike. I've tried it and didn't work but I didn't restart the machine inbetween... I'm now in the middle of something. Will do it later and will edit this post with the results.

Thanks.
