 Post subject: HP NC 4000 laptop problems

when i turn this on the lights ie hard drive etc lights up but it doesnt post or boot. Its not the screen as i have tested that. I also have tested the hard drive and ram and these are fine. any one got any suggestions on what could be wrong cheers :(

What are you getting on the screen? It doesn't turn on at all, or gives you a blinking under score line, or?

the srceen is totaly blank

Sounds like a hardware issue here, is it bleeping when trying to boot up?

Can you at least get into BIOS at all? If not, can you hear the HDD spinning? Did you open the laptop at all that may have been touched in some way that might affect the hardware? Such as RAM, HDD, Mobo, etc...

We can just work this out one step at a time...

if screen is totally blank then i advice check VGA port/cable ;)

connect a moniter(lcd) in ur leapy for check

hi there is no beeps when u turn it on. so no error codes to read.
it doesnt post or boot so no bois
have tried the vga still no out put
it never been fully opened the ram and hard drive were removed to test
u can hear the hard drive spin up
it was turn off one night and then the next day wouldnt work :cry: :oops:

This sounds like your laptops PSU is shot or even the laptops motherboard. :?

Aha. The problem is the power regulator chip, located near the fan. It's the infamous Maxim 1987 chip.
Flexing of the mainboard when opening/ closing the lid causes hairline fractures in the 40 minuscule solder connections.

The only "fix" is to either re-solder it or re-flow the solder using a heat gun.

I use fix in quotations because the mainboard will keep flexing afterward, the solder will again crack, and we'll be back here.

HP's fault on this one.
