Post subject: The USB 3.0 thread
New postPosted: Thu Feb 10, 2011 9:17 pm

I have heard that USB 3 will become the norm later this year (at least in new models).
Then I heard that Apple will not support it (it least in the near future?)

what have you heard?

discuss

I have a USB 3 blu-ray drive

USB 3.0 is already the norm.
Apple not supporting it doesn't come as a surprise, and if/when they do it'll cost the earth!

Which USB 3.0 Blu-Ray drive you have?

Apple won't support it yet because the price is still too high and not enough people are using USB 3.0 peripherals yet. They have already said they would support it however with their killing off of Firewire. Have you noticed that no new Macs have Firewire anymore? Yeah it's because USB killed it - not because it's faster, but because it's easier and everyone has USB everything...

Yeah USB won by being the most popular and not because it was the best (just like laser discs were pretty sweet but never took off, HD DVDs were, arguably, better in many ways but Sony threw more $$$ into Blu-ray etc.) I'm glad to see a standard across the major platforms. I have no 3.0 devices (or a MB that supports 3.0 for that matter) but I will be glad when it becomes the norm because 2.0 is painfully slow (relatively speaking, that is :))

I'm looking at getting the 3.0 PCIe card seeing as my motherboard supports it. Found a decent external HD for around $79 with 3.0 too so it'll be interesting to speed match it.

Yes, external HDD that are UB3 are not much more expensive than USB2 ones
