New postPosted: Wed May 27, 2009 3:14 am

@ chris5858 & Rich - Ok thanks, I was of the opinion [after reading lots of articles on various sites] that it would be ok to switch the UAC off in view of the fact that I am the sole user of my laptop, but I haven't switched it off yet! I wanted to solicit a few views from folk on here first, before I did so. I was convinced in my own mind that it WOULD be ok to switch it off, as am very careful with what I download and also the fact that nobody else uses my laptop but me. Thanks folks! :)

YES!! One of the first things I did when I got my new computer was shut off UAC. I find it very annoying.

However, I am a very experienced user on Windows so I know how to avoid the bad stuff. Inexperienced users might benefit from it, though, even if it is a pain (which it is).

One more thing: The only Vista computer (hence, the only one with UAC) is my laptop. If other people used it other than me, it would probably be on.

If you switch off the black(Secure) desktop and are logged as an administrator its less annoying. Then all you do is click one button.

you can also download norton uac tool http://www.nortonlabs.com/inthelab/uac.php
it allows uac to "remember" what programs you have allowed (admin accounts only)

@ Sqyber - Do you use this Norton tool? I see it's only just over a Mb in size. Will I get plagued with Norton adware or nag screens with this tool? -I've used Norton AV before and I now try to avoid Norton products if I can, but if it's a useful tool I may give it a try. :)

@ randomchaos
I wouldn't touch Norton products with a barge poll :o
UAC is a useful feature for certain PC users.
I personally turned mine off about 2hrs after getting Vista. I put up with it for a while on Windows 7 but again, got frustrated with it's inconsistency, thought it was flawed and turned it off. My girlfriend and my brother use my PC. They're both useless with them and i don't feel having UAC turned on would really protect me that much anyway. The 'Bomb-proof' user account in Windows 7 should do the trick enough, and with DEP and my internet security, i feel UAC has been made redundant.
You can get a piece of small software that tweaks UAC, i can't remember the name, google it. Try it and see if it's for you. Personally i'd just turn the damn thing off though
