Post subject: Vista Home Premium will not install SP1
New postPosted: Sat Oct 23, 2010 2:46 am

I have had to reinstall my operating system on my Dell. It came with XP Media Center 2005 and an upgrade disc to Vista Home Premium. I have installed this before with no problems. Now I have tried several times and no matter what I do when it comes time for SP1 to install (No, I do not have a firewall or other program interferring) my system goes through download, install and then the three phases of applying the changes. When it gets to 100% of phase 3 it says it failed and then when it reboots I am told there is a file missing and I have to repair windows or even do a restore point to get running again. HELP...

Where is the upgrade downloading from? Dell? Is there any chance you can get a disc, from Dell, to upgrade with?

Sorry I missed this thread for so long...

To quote Bugsy:

System File Checker = Open Command Prompt As Administrator & Type sfc /scannow Hit enter

The System File Checker will look for any system files/.dll file's that are corrupt and will attempt to fix these normally following a re start of your computer.

This can also be run in safemode too by selecting Safemode with command prompt privilage.

Try repairing your system files and then running the SP1 installer again.

For this post the author Makcalable has received gratitude : Rich

Also make sure you disable you AV software as sometimes it can interfere when istalling Service packs.

And make sure you have enough disk space left too ;)

Edit

Why don't you install SP1 & 2 from the windows updater as this way is recommended anyway?

You say you have installed this before but to be honest your just going to be creating a lot of corrupt system files by going back and forth with the upgrading, when doing an upgrade it will always leave redundant files on your computer no matter what people tell, it just does and they are very hard to find and fix... the best way is a clean install of any OS this way they will be no possible damaged system or program files that may be lurking.

Try running a small program called Ccleaner to clean up you computer, then try again.
