I recently ran the Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool to see if there were any detectable issues happening with my installed RAM. I wasn't having any issues. Just wanted to see how the tool worked.

Now I have a new icon on my system tray Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool that doesn't show any info, I have even tried to double click and right click on it with no success. And of course it will not go away even after rebooting.

I also tried using this command I found after searching on the internet

bcdedit /bootsequence {memdiag} /remove

with no change.

Go HERE and this will solve your issue, the icon your talking about will only be active when the mem test is active, but to remove the icon completely follow the guide I have left you.

Although I would like to add that I have only ever tried this on windows 7 and not vista.

Well, it sure did disappear when I followed those instructions. When I rebooted, it came back.

Anything else you can think of, let me know. I sure appreciate what you've said so far.

What happens when you left or right click the icon on system tray?

Can you provide a screen shot as from the file you left I cannot see the icon in question or the system tray?

Check the Task Manager and then the processes and applications make sure it isn't still running.

Try this

You need to locate the = HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify

Delete all the entries for IconStreams and PastIconsStream.

Now press CTRL + ALT + DEL Start Task Manager locate explorer.exe in the list then Kill the Processes.

Now Click File New Task (RUN) and type explorer.exe press ok.

Now Reboot

I did find the memory diagnostic in taskschd, which seems odd to me that it would automatically be put there since it doesn't even run under windows (I can sort of see why though). But why doesn't it prompt me to remove it when test is done?

I am hoping that what I did in taskschd is enough and I can leave the registry entry

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify

alone. But I will file it away for the future.

Killing explorer.exe and restarting it did remove the icon but on rebooting it would come back. Double clicking or right clicking produced no results.

Ummmm how odd the Taskchd Non System Processes probably meaning your registry has has suffered fragmentation.

I would suggest your next move would be to perform a Chkdsk see HERE

Firstly though I would download and install Ccleaner HERE

You should also run the Defrag utility too as I think that it the reason you have Taskchd sitting in the Processes, time for a Defrag

Registry Booster to resolve issues in registry.
Wise Registry Cleaner to defrag registry.
Windows defrag for hard drive.

I do this on occasion but maybe I should do it more often.

Don't take this the wrong way buddy, but you have most probably messed up your system yourself by using snake oil programs like Registry Booster, Wise Registry Cleaner!

Registry cleaners are a no no, you do not need a registry cleaner to remove old registries, what do you think it will do? Improve your computer performance? Nope.

It does nor will it ever improve your computer performance by removing old registries from your computer, you do not need to remove them, windows is designed to ignore registries and therefore will not slow your system down at all, period. and fact. for what registries will be removed anyway would be something like 1kb's of memory if you lucky.

Well I hope you have made plenty of these registry backup's from these snake oil programs...... because to rectify your problem you may have to back in time if know what i mean.

Registry cleaners do more harm than good. Ccleaner is good for cleaning old temp files and aiding the repairs after a removal of a virus.

I've heard this debate before. I bought Registry Booster (and considered them reputable (Uniblue that is)) but Wise (free) was to defrag only and I thought that meant no removals would be done; just moved around like on a hard drive.

I will read that article (thanks ) and see where I am. I am having an issue with the security center (can't start it) and the error is 5 Access denied. Pretty sure it just started too.
