 Post subject: autocheck file missing
New postPosted: Mon Oct 22, 2012 2:59 am

All was ok until I updated my dvdr on my Dell P4 desktop with Windows XP. Now when I power up I get the Dell logo for over a minute whereupon I get a blue screen with the message " autochk file not found - skipping autocheck", but it doesn't skip it; it just stalls there.

I have a Dell reinstallation disk that I loaded ok and entered "R", which loaded the setup ok. I only ran "chkdsk" which did not solve the problem. It appears to be a disk I/O sector missing but I am reluctant to try another of the list of available commands because I am a novice and do not want to risk losing my data if I can avoid it.

If feasible, how can I recover without losing my data?
