How do I get better firewall on my computer? The computer I have at my dad's house is a XP and a decent computer, but it's kinda suckish on protection. I use spybot search and destroy, and Norton until it expires. Then im downloading AVG free to replace Norton. Anyone have any suggestions on how to get better firewall?

For this post the author Makcalable has received gratitude : Rich

Dont use AVG unless you like looking at bsod. ;) it is quite common with this there is a lot of evidence to back this up, however not everyone experiences this it all depends on you system specs/hardware/and what you use it for...ie Gaming/Downloading/Browsing etc.

if you decide to go with AVG and you do start experiencing bsod then 99% chance it will be AVG causing you problems.

download and install Microsoft Security Essentials get rid of spybot use malwareBytes free.

just use windows firewall or zonealarm firwall.

only have 1 AV program installed on your computer

any more questions just give us a shout ;)

MalwareBytes Here

Microsoft Security Essentials Here

ZoneAlarm FireWall Here

:ugeek: Quick Heal Total Security 2011n BTW i m using too its awesome :D

Firewall Protection :ugeek:

Firewall Protection feature works silently in the background and monitors network activity for malicious behavior to ensure their elimination before the malwares can reach the system. The method of detecting malicious network activity is done by Intrusion Detection System and the method of preventing malicious network activity is done by Intrusion Prevention System.

This is only a suggestion, why don't you try commodo firewall? It is free and provides hips and ids.

Most people rate this pretty highly and I've tried it. I can't recommend it as I haven't used it much but this could be a good one to go with.

I just use Windows Firewall and DD-WRT on my router.

Since you are using Windows XP, I do not recommend using Windows built-in Firewall.

Compared to the one in Vista/7, XP's Firewall is rubbish.

You can see a comparison of Tested Firewall by Matousec - The top scoring Firewall's (free and paid) usually have HIPS/IDS.
For example:
Comodo Internet Security 5 has a HIPS module named Defense+, hence why it scores top, but it also has pop-ups to let the USER decide.

As for an antivirus, I can recommend using:
- Avast! 5 Free, (Requires registration to activate 1 year free license).
Why?
- If any malware is detected, avast! automatically blocks it. No user intervention required.

Hope this helps.

EDIT: Looks like this Topic was solved, anyways.
