It is not a big deal but out of the blue I find that my IP address is changed from 1.2 to say 1.4. Just a hassle changing port forwarding etc... Is there a registry surgery or something that needs to be done?

You will need to set up Static IP address for your network.
It appears you have Dynamic IP address which changes whatever...Static is constant and stays the same.
I don't have a lot of time to post Snapshots and the How to Change Dynamic or Automatic IP address, to Static....
Although its for DNS, setting IP address is obvious.
