I have just started running Spotify and it seems like a great piece of software. I did read somewhere but can't find the original post now about the safest way to run it seeing how it is linked in with FB. Does anyone have any settings advice for this? I do run FB but really don't use it all that often.

I don't use either myself but i would image that it's your Facebook settings you need to amend. For example, setting your "Publicly display what i'm listening to" to private etc.
A pretty vague answer but one that hopefully will make sense if you dig through your FB account settings.
