This popup started this morning and I want to get rid of it. Yesterday , before downloading the free version of "advancedsystemcare4" [recommended by your free book, for which much thanks, it is very informative] I did a full scan with fully updated Microsoft essentials and malware bytes anti malware and they found nothing . I scanned the set up file for "advancedsystemcare4" with both programmes before installation. I then ran the quick check with all defaults.

I clicked over the popup which I thought was part of "advancedsystemcare4" , and a screen was opened with the title MS Webcheck Monitor, and I saw that my screen was captured by this "program" (something like a printscreen). I cannot get rid of the program or close it but I can close the window. A small window has also appeared [and then disappeared] in the corner of the desk top which showed my resource usage. I do not know if that is relevant.

A web discussion of a program of this name in 2005 [on http://www.pcguide.com] said
"Well, in conclusion, FINALLY, I've DELETED the program called HPTSKMGR.EXE, and the popup has never re-appeared"
I searched in programs and failed to find *TSKMGR.EXE,

I have no program either called webcheck [or anything similar] or with a name containing TSKMGR, according to MS list of programmes to uninstal or revo uninstaller

Would the pop up go away if I go back to a system restore point created shortly before installing "advancedsystemcare4"?

It depends on how malicious the code is. I recommend you try a system restore.

Did you download that file from a web search or from a link in my book? I'm hoping the former as the links lead to a trusted source. Please let me know.

The problem is no longer in evidence since rebooting, but this may perhaps be because I have not run the program a second time [being somewhat nervous about it]. I will try reverting to the previously saved restore point. [I have never done this but I think it should be straightforward]. Perhaps I should also delete this copy of the program and get a new copy from your link [ http://mintywhite.com/go/asc/]

I was using Foxit reader to read your book and it does not link to web pages for some reason, so I used web search to find the program

AdvancedSystemCare 5.4.0.257 is the LATEST version.

I have used Iobit's ASC [along with CCleaner] for years with no problem whatsoever.

Can you upload the file you have to virustotal.com and let us know the scan result?

Have you tried running Malwarebytes? Free version here:- http://www.malwarebytes.org/

I have already checked it with malwarebytes. no problems detected

virustotal.com found 1 problem

They had already found this problem last March.

I have restored to old restore point and deleted version 4 and installed the up to date version from your link. So far no problems.
