New postPosted: Wed Oct 28, 2009 10:48 am

Hi, i tried to create system restore points on my HP laptop but i am told i cant make one coz the feature is disabled by the Group policy. I am the one and only user of my laptop and i have administrative capabilities but what the hell is the Group policy thing not letting me to create system restore points manually?
I used to create them before but now i can't :(

Hello imiunleashed & welcome :D

Type gpedit.msc into the start search box and press enter.
Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > System Restore.

You can configure system restore there.

Thanks for the quick reply :D but my problem is not yet solved :(
i cannot find gpedit.msv in my laptop. I am using Vista Home Premium SP1.
Does my version of Windows have the gpedit.msv option or file?
If it does have, it means my file is destroyed or something wrong has happened :(
The system restore screen has greyed out the options for me to create my own System Restore points..and it says "Restore point creation disabled by Group policy". But automatic creation of the restore points are made by the system when i install/uninstall or update my laptop.
The problem is that i cannot create my own System Restore Points...:(

Your version of Windows doesn't have the Group policy editor.

Try typing services.msc into the start menu search and make sure that the system restore/backup service is started. If not, enable it and set it to automatic

Before you do, backup these keys.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Schedule

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Schedule\Parameters

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Schedule\Enum

What was the status of the service. Did you try the registry entry?

Type regedit into the start menu and hit enter.

Navigate to;

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\SystemRestore

In the right hand pane, delete the values;

DisableConfig
DisableSR

Exit regedit & reboot. Once you've rebooted, type rstrui.exe into the start menu & hit enter.

P.S Same applies as before, backup the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\SystemRestore branch before proceeding. :)

Let me know what happens :D
