Post subject: Using dual-monitors on Vista
New postPosted: Mon Aug 18, 2008 6:27 am

I'm currently using a dual-monitor setup on Vista SP1, with one monitor being setup to extend the desktop. Does anyone know if there's any way to reconfigure this so that I can have different wallpapers on each screen, but retain the functionality that extending the desktop provides?

Many thanks,
-John.

There are two things you can do:

1. If you don't like running extra software, simply merge the two wallpapers into one and set them as the wallpaper.

i.e. take wallpapers 1 & 2 and put them side by side, save them as an image, and set it as the wallpaper.

2. Install Display Fusion, which will allow you to set separate wallpapers and more: http://www.binaryfortress.com/displayfusion/

Hope this helps,

Rich

Thanks for the reply!

One of the reasons I upgraded to Vista was that I needed to re-install my OS since I'd installed so much junk in the past that was clogging up the system. SInce I work in IT, I thought it would be a good idea to get to know Vista better.

Now, since I'm using extended desktop (i.e. primary monitor displaying main desktop, with a second to the side that I can move apps onto) both screens show the same, single wallpaper. If I try to use one that's too big, it just gets compressed to fit, so I end up with a squashed photo on each screen, instead of one large one!

Is there a different dialog that I haven't found yet that allows me to tell it not to resize the photo?

Many thanks,
-John.

When you set the wallpaper, do you get a choice of tile, stretch, or fit? Select stretch and see how that works...

I have another question concerning dual monitors...
I heard that using Vista, I can use a second monitor, that under some circumstancies can show what I have in my hard disk. This could happen while my copmuters is turned off as I read.
Now this statement, is something I read about one year ago and it might not be exactly as was written. So first of all I want somebody to correct me, if knows something like that. Then if there is something like that really going on, I want to know how this can happen.
If someone wants to know and search on his own to understand what I might be confused with, I believe it was on RAM magazine where I read about it.

You might be thinking about Windows SideShow (Not to be confused with Sidebar). Sideshow is an application in Vista that allows supported devices (the keyword being SUPPORTED, in other words something that has the Sideshow logo on the box... there are NOT many supported devices) such as cellphones, PDAs, digital picture frames, etc. connected to the computer physically or wirelessly to display information that you would like it to while the computer is off. For example, a wireless supported digital picture frame in a different room could display the time, RSS feeds, weather, etc. just like sidebar. It's actually pretty neat, but once again, finding something that is supported is the tricky part. I hope this is what you were thinking of.

I wondered about this as well.

I found UltraMon to be the best utility. TONS of features. Not free, however.

You can try ManageDesk from http://www.managebytes.com/

You don't even have to have multiple monitors :P :D :P
