New postPosted: Tue Dec 20, 2011 6:40 am

The other afternoon the pc was shutdown as normal. I thought at the time that the screen closed (powered off) rather quicker than normal. A few hours later rebooted and was faced with the "windows did not close properly screen". Took the option to open windows normally.

Now my icons for apps on the desktop have gone strange!
The icon is there but is covered by a default windows one!
Have included a couple of pics from which you can just see the correct icon behind this nasty windows one.
Have done the icon cache delete and rebuild - no luck.

Anyone any thoughts?

Amazing. Left my PC off for a day. Booted still same problem.
But then started to get a series of BOD's. The third time I was informed that 'windows had recovered from a serious error'.
Low and behold the weird icons have gone!

I have no idea as to the error. As a precaution I have uninstalled 'Gizmo' and returned to MadApp Launcher. I just love the clean desktop look!

I would love to know if anyone has any ideas as to what was the problem was.

Happy New Year!

SI

I have the same problem except Icon Cache Rebuilder did not correct it. The only place I have the problem is on the desktop. All other icons seem to be fine. Any help is appreciated! Thanks Sonny64

Hi, Sonny64.

Have you tried the manual method?

Are your Desktop icons set to change with Themes? Right Click Desktop > Personalise > Change Desktop Icons > Uncheck 'Allow themes to change desktop icons'. Now restart Explorer (make sure no copy/move jobs are working) by Clicking the Start Orb typing tskill explorer and hitting enter.

Perform this method:

Use CTRL+SHIFT+ESC to launch Task Manager.
In Process tab find explorer.exe and right click on it and then select End Process.
Then click on the End Process button on the confirmation window.
Now from Task Manger go to File>New Task (Run…) and type cmd.exe and click OK.
In the command prompt enter below commands one by one

CD %userprofile%\AppData\Local
DEL IconCache.db /a
EXIT

Then again go to Task Manger>File>New Task (Run…).
Type explorer.exe and select OK.
This should restore the Icon cache... It worked great for me. It happened to me last week.

NOTE: The key here is deleting the file "IconCache.db /a" and then rerun the Explore via Task Manager.

Let me know if this works

Rick's method, truncated. From the command prompt:

taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
cd %localappdata%
del IconCache.db
explorer

Ran the procedure....double checked each step and checked results. When completed, I created a new shortcut from windows explorer directly to the desktop. The offending icon still appeared over top of the created icon. Short of strategically placed high explosives, what's next?

Out of curiosity, I placed 2 .exe files (not shortcuts) onto the desktop. The icons for the exe files stayed as they should have. No other icons over them. Does that give you any new ideas?

@Stu... Thanks for the short simple code (commands)

@Sonny64 ... What files are you placing on the desktop? Please specify. It seems like your system is not right, but until I have verified the name of the "...exe" file, maybe we can justify from there... Otherwise, the Rebuilder as UVAIS posted and my commands as well as truncated command that Stu corrected should have resolved the issues. Otherwise, it seems you have an unrecoverable icon cache or something internal preventing from being fixed.

Have you considered going back to a working OS that did not cause this problem?
